May 2008 News Letter

My Brother Knights:

“Hope” and “Inspiration” are two words that come to mind as I reflect upon Pope Benedict XVI’s recent journey to Washington and New York. His warmth and radiant love extended well past the Catholic community. Let us pray that his visit will initiate an increase in faith and vocation to both the priesthood and religious life. As Knights of Columbus, we should be proud to have Pope Benedict XVI as our leader. Our Council will continue to support the Catholic Church through our actions and deeds.

The Knights’ Drive for the Mentally Challenged, which just took place at the end of April, is a prime example of the charity, unity, and fraternity of our Council. These traits, exhibited by our Council’s volunteers during the four days of the drive, continue to demonstrate what the Knights of Columbus represent. Stay tuned for a final report on the drive in June’s newsletter.

Please support our Tricky Tray on June 6th, as it is our biggest fundraiser of the year.

The Council is planning to host a Second Degree on Thursday, June 12, 2008. Please advise John O’Brien or Vinnie Lobello of potential candidates as Second Degrees are hard to find. A First Degree will be held at Council 6504’s meeting in East Hanover on Monday, May 12, 2008. Please contact the above Brothers for the information about the First Degree as well.

Our Scholarship Committee has selected the 2008 recipients of the George F. Coppola Scholarship. Congratulations to Robert Cichocki, a senior at Whippany Park High School, and Alexander Letterese from Morristown High School. Robert is a member of Council 6904 and Alexander is the son of our Brother Mike Letterese. Please attend our June 5th meeting, at which we will present $1,000 scholarships to these outstanding students. The George F. Coppola Scholarship is funded in part through the dues collected from each Brother, while the remainder is raised through our Council’s fundraisers.

Finally, I would like to recognize Vinnie Lobello as the May 2008 Knight of the Month. He has taken the initiative to increase our membership by assuming responsibility for the Blitzes this spring. A Fourth Degree member, Vinnie not only was actively involved at Notre Dame and Our Lady of Mercy for the membership drives, but he was also an integral part of developing our new CD membership presentation. As a result, Council 6904 received 10 new membership interest cards. Vinnie also initiated the Knights’ ‘Follow Me’ group at Notre Dame, which we hope to expand next year. Please join me in congratulating Vinnie Lobello as Knight of the Month!

Vivat Jesus,

Dennis

The May Social meeting will be on the 15th.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE

The Hanover Township Memorial Day parade will be held on May 26th. Muster is at 9:30 am at the Whippany Park High School. (Look for the guys with the funny hats !!!) All Brothers are invited to come and march.

COPPOLA'S

To my Brothers all, once again the Knights of Columbus outdid themselves by preparing and serving hot dogs for approximately 700 plus Little Leaguers. The only problem we had was that someone on the Little League staff may have miscalculated the number of Little Leaguers planning to participate. So we ended up with too few dogs and too many kids. This is the first time since we assumed this responsibility (PGK Tony Mongiovi's legacy) that we experienced the aforementioned problem. Regardless, the good far outweighed the bad. The weather was beautiful, the parade proceeded nicely, the ceremony was short and, more importantly, a good time was had by all.

It never ceases to amaze me how our Council can pull-off these events so effortlessly. However, nothing gets done without the huge number of Brothers and their children who participate. This year was no different thanks to Brothers Mike Ricciardi, Gerald Martino, Vinnie Lobello, Major Joe Kowalski, dependable Bob Peters, Joe, Kevin and Nathan Ward, Joe Milano, Topsey Tony Lentine, Mark Kearney, Joe Pisauro, and, last but not least, Ralph Cetrulo. I've said this many times and will continue to state that “they will come”. We are by in large the best council in the State.

May the Peace of the Lord be with you all and your families always.....George!

CAMDEN YARDS

Our Annual trip to Camden Yards to watch the Yankees play the Orioles will be Sunday, August 24th. Game time is 1pm. If you would like to go to the game, but drive yourself, let me know how many tickets you want. Cost will be between $20 and $22/ticket.

Pope Benedict's visit: One word: WOW!

Our collection for the Mentally Challenged shows almost everybody gives something, that's nice.

Correction! Bro. Al Noll and his wife, Ronnie, celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. Sounds like a record....anybody beat that?

Good to see all the SUN BIRDS back.... I think Paul got taller! Must be the rain!

That KofC video was put together by Bro. Vince Lobello's son and it is TERRIFIC!! Thanks very much, young man.

Remember awhile back when a half-gallon of ice cream sneaked down to 1.75 quarts? Well, they're at it again! Some are now only 1.5 quarts! Price is the same, of course.

I was very proud to receive another very nice thank you letter for the great dinner the A-team prepared for the high school cast and crew. This one from the Superintendent of Schools (I think he's the top banana).

Wait ‘til you see that new house going up on Howell Street in Whippany... I think you could fit two or three Monroe Halls inside.

Don't forget those 20% off coupons when you buy your donations for the Tricky Tray... everybody wins.

We're scheduled to go to Eva's Kitchen on June 7th. Want to help? Call me at 973-887-6752.

IN CASE OF SERIOUS ILLNESS OR DEATH, NOTIFY THE GRAND KNIGHT OR DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT AT ONCE.
