February 2008 News Letter

My Brother Knights:

As we enter the month of February, an image that comes to mind is the heart, which typically represents Valentine’s Day. It is from the heart that I will relay some of the positive events that have transpired over the past month. It is the charity of the Brothers who chair and volunteer at these events that makes them successful.

Our Council held its First Degree meeting on January 17th where we proudly received four new members. Please welcome Jim Davidson, Cedar Knolls Fire Chief, Robert Chichocki, an accomplished senior at Whippany Park, John Troianello, sponsored by Committeeman Len Fariello, and John DeCoursey, whom may be the closest member living near Monroe Hall. We hope that these new Brothers will become an active part of our Council and that their sponsors will see them through their degrees.

At the First Degree, in honor of Pope Benedict XVI, there were over 50 Brothers from our Council in attendance, in addition to sponsors and Officers from four other Councils. I am certain that they were impressed by the performance of the First Degree Team and the Brothers of Council 6904. I would like to thank Mike Czuchnicki who led our First Degree Team; John O’Brien, our membership Director, responsible for recruiting new members and also a member of our First Degree team; and Father Dan, who provided for our repast with the help of Killer Joe and Joe Ward.

I would also like to thank Bob Fleiger and the Brothers who cooked and served food at Eva’s Kitchen and Mike Ricciardi who revealed that a record amount of money was collected by our Brothers and sons of Brothers for the Roses for Life drive. Thanks also to our Chaplain, Father Justin, who came to support our First Degree. It was great to see you at the meeting.

Please support our upcoming events and help make Council 6904 even greater than it already is!

It is always hard to pick out a Knight of the Month because there are so many worthy members. I would like to recognize Brother Mike Ricciardi as February’s Knight of the Month. He is always a top sponsor of new candidates for membership and has just completed chairing the Roses for Life drive for the eighth year in a row. This year, a record $1,560 was raised to support Birth Right and Birth Haven. Mike has written a report on the logistics of this activity, which will enable us to run this function adequately in the event that a new Knight leads in the future. Mike is in charge of the Ushers at Notre Dame Church and he is also Captain of the Fourth Degree Color Corp. Please congratulate Mike on his dedication and join me in commending the positive model he portrays for the Knights of Columbus and Council 6904.

Vivat Jesus,

Dennis

INSURANCE NEWS
On guard: protecting your ID is critical

Identity theft has established itself as the signature crime of the digital world. Victims can lose fortunes and spend months, even years, trying to repair their credit. And the nasty part is, it’s a relatively easy crime to commit. Some thieves still use low-tech “Dumpster diving” to get personal information, while others create elaborate online schemes. Thieves can use a small amount of your personal information to unlock more data—some Web sites will even provide your Social Security number for a fee. Even some publicly-posted government documents display enough personal information for thieves to do their work. Follow a few simple tactics to protect your identity:

bullet Guard your Social Security number. Don’t carry your card with you.
bullet Shred sensitive documents.
bullet Remove mail from your mailbox soon after it’s received, and don’t leave outgoing mail in your personal mailbox.
bullet Contact one of the credit bureaus to establish a monitoring system for your credit report. Check your report at least once a year. Be sure to also carefully review your credit card bills. The three main credit bureaus are: Equifax (www.equifax.com); TransUnion (www.transunion.com); and Experian (www.experian.com).
bullet Make sure your online passwords include a mix of numbers, letters, and symbols. Don’t use your birth date or Social Security number!
bullet Never give out personal information over the phone, through the mail, or over the Internet.

The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as nine million Americans have their identity stolen every year. If you’re one of those who don’t make it easy, you’re far more likely to be overlooked by thieves.

ROSES FOR LIFE

I would like to thank all of you for making our 2008 Roses for Life Drive such a success. It couldn’t have happened without many of you volunteering your time to hand out the roses that symbolize our support for life after each and every mass. I would also like to thank our Priests at both Churches who did a terrific job of promoting our Roses Drive at the end of each Mass. We had 36 Knights and 2 of their young sons who covered every mass at the two Churches and collected $1,560 – a new record! I can’t thank you enough. You can be sure that your volunteering helped save a baby’s life and went a long way toward ensuring that a young mother and her baby have a chance at a better life. I would like to thank the following for volunteering:

Carmen Blandino, Joe Pisauro (3 masses), Jim Matlon, John Hendricks, Dennis Dittrick, Charles Forsythe, Ralph LeFevere, Dan Aloia, Tony Lentine, Bob Peters, Bob Fleiger, John Gigantino, John Guido, Peter Longo, Gerardo Frisoli, Bob Gallo, Vincent LoBello (2 masses), Bob O’Hare, Jim Ruvo, Rich Koch, Joe Barron, John O’Brien, George Coppola, Joe Bono & Tony Bono, Leo Kelly, Dennis Fashano, Joe Harris & Luke Harris, Tony Amitrano, Mario Tiberi, Jerry Berardi, Adolf Schimpf, Nick Cetrulo, Mike Rinaldi, Jerry Martino, and Dan Lieneck.
